Waterfowl Traditions
From Market Hunting to Conservation and the Responsibility to Maintain What We Carry Forward
From Market Hunting to Conservation
In the 1800s and early 1900s, waterfowl were harvested commercially on a massive scale. Market hunters supplied ducks and geese to restaurants, hotels, and growing cities. Large bore punt guns and other highly efficient methods allowed enormous numbers of birds to be taken at one time.
Punt guns were enormous shotguns mounted to small boats and used by market hunters to take large numbers of waterfowl with a single shot. Some fired shells as large as 2 gauge, a size that reflected the scale of commercial harvest during that era.
The oversized 2 gauge shell displayed by RUSTDEEZ represents that chapter of waterfowl history and the dramatic difference between market hunting and the conservation based traditions carried forward today.
That era helped push several waterfowl populations into serious decline and forced the hunting community and the country to confront a hard truth: without limits, habitat protection, and responsible stewardship, the resource would not last.
The end of market hunting marked the beginning of a new tradition one built around conservation, ethical harvest, and protecting waterfowl for future generations.
The Conservation Movement
What followed was one of the most important changes in the history of waterfowl hunting.
Laws such as the Lacey Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act helped end uncontrolled commercial harvest and established stronger protections for migratory birds.
The Federal Duck Stamp created a direct way for hunters to help fund wetland conservation, while wildlife refuges protected critical habitat used for nesting, migration, and wintering.
Waterfowlers became part of the recovery not just by following seasons and bag limits, but by helping fund conservation and supporting the protection of the resource itself.
Modern waterfowl hunting exists because the culture changed from unlimited harvest to responsible stewardship.
The Modern Waterfowler
Today’s waterfowler carries forward a different tradition built on responsibility, respect, and conservation.
Modern waterfowlers follow seasons and bag limits, support habitat protection, introduce new hunters to the outdoors, and pass down the skills and values that keep the tradition alive. Family, friends, retrievers, boats, blinds, decoys, and early mornings all become part of that shared experience.
The goal is no longer simply to take birds. It is to protect the resource, respect the hunt, and preserve the opportunity for the next generation.
The Equipment We Trust
Waterfowl hunters depend on their equipment in some of the harshest conditions in the field.
Shotguns, decoys, waders, calls, boats, retrievers, and ammunition all play a part in the hunt. Each piece represents time, preparation, experience, and money invested in the tradition.
Caring for that equipment is part of respecting the hunt. Maintenance helps protect what we rely on, preserve what we have paid for, and keep our gear ready for the next season.
Where RUSTDEEZ Fits
RUSTDEEZ supports the modern waterfowler by helping maintain unfired shotgun shells affected by light to moderate exterior corrosion.
Moisture, humidity, rain, mud, and saltwater exposure can leave buildup on the shell head that may interfere with smooth chambering and extraction. RUSTDEEZ gives hunters a simple way to address that exterior buildup before the next hunt.
It is not about replacing tradition. It is about carrying forward the same responsibility hunters already apply to their shotguns, boats, decoys, waders, and other trusted equipment.
Recover what you have paid for. Maintain what you own.
Carrying the Tradition Forward
Waterfowl hunting has changed across generations, but the responsibility remains the same.
Respect the resource. Preserve the tradition. Care for the equipment trusted in the field. Pass the experience forward.
RUSTDEEZ is one small part of that larger commitment.
Recover what you have paid for. Maintain what you own.
